ART
The Art Program at WRMS is designed to foster a love of creating and to enhance the thinking process. Because of the nature of many middle school students, emphasis is placed on:

All lessons are built on Art principles and theory. National standards and state frameworks are followed. Art history is incorporated into the curriculum as an obvious connection to the task at hand. Students will be informed of the relevance of their work, its connection to society and its value for future growth. Whenever possible, the art program will work with other subject areas to enhance their themes and add another dimension to student studies. Areas of study can include: Color studies, painting skills and exploration, inactive art history, 1-2-3 point perspective, relief and sculpture, clay, observational skills, plaster, problem solving, calligraphy, lettering, advertising design, self-assessment and cultural awareness.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
The primary goal of the Computer Technology program at WRMS is to develop knowledge of ethical, responsible use of technology tools in a society that relies heavily on information knowledge for decision making. Students become proficient in the use of industry standard applications to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, and create information within the context of the core subjects.

The Computer Technology program at WRMS focuses on developing and reinforcing skills designed to fulfill computer literacy requirements as defined by NH ICT state standards. These skills include: keyboarding, word processing, as well as generating spreadsheets, graphs and databases. Students will also learn safe and appropriate Internet usage, research techniques and web evaluation. They will create a multimedia project where they will gather information, format it, and build a presentation and learn the basic skills of how to present it. Throughout the middle school years students will build upon these basic technology skills while integrating topics from their classroom curriculum and collecting digital artifacts to build their digital portfolios. These digital portfolios will be used to assess and evaluate if students are proficient in the computer literacy requirements as defined by the NH ICT state standards.

Parents are encouraged to read Mrs. Pearson's Welcome letter and Computer Curriculum for 6th Grade, 7th Grade, and 8th Grade for the 2011-2012 school year.

GENERAL MUSIC
In 6th grade, students will sing songs from around the world, and will learn about the orchestra, the human voice, and musical theater. They will also spend time learning about Baroque, Classical and Romantic composers and their music.

In 7th and 8th grade, students will expand on the above while exploring American composers, the history of Rock & Roll, world music and music theory. They will also learn about world drumming and playing the keyboard through hands-on units.

Our goal is to make music a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and to instill in all students an appreciation of music from many time periods and of many styles.

HEALTH
Health Education is designed to empower the learner to take responsibility toward adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Along with learning about various topics, students will simultaneously learn skills and strategies necessary in making healthy decisions.

The Middle School Health curriculum is comprehensive and covers not only the NH State standards, but National Health education Standards as well. While units of study vary from grade to grade, the basic areas of physical, mental and social health are integrated within the curriculum at each grade level.

Students will be given a number of tests throughout the quarter. Generally these follow a unit of study. Students will occasionally have homework; most often it will require finishing assignments started in class.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Winnisquam Regional Physical Education program is an integral part of the educational process taught by certified Physical Education instructors. Unique to other areas of the total school curriculum, physical education provides movement-centered and knowledge-based activities for students. The focus of the physical education program is to offer activities in a safe environment which meets the physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs of all students. A well balanced program offering diversified activities provides students with the opportunity to develop an acceptable level of fitness, a broad spectrum of physical skills, and the knowledge necessary to use the skills and maintain fitness for a lifetime of active participation. Positive achievement in physical education will leave students with a legacy of success in physical activity and help to ensure that they will enjoy an active life style.

Physical Education classes are required of all students except those who are medically excused by a doctor, the school nurse or a parental excuse note. Each student will have physical education everyday for one quarter.

For most 6th graders having to change for class is a new experience. Shorts, T-shirts, sweat pants, sweat shirts and sneakers are all acceptable for class. Lockers are also provided for each student; however, physical education clothing should not be left in the lockers overnight, unless they are locked with a combination lock. Master locks seem to work best and last the longest.

Warm-ups will be performed before every class. Warm-ups will consist of a variety of muscular stretching and will conclude with different cardiovascular exercise such as running or tag games.

Co-educational physical education classes will offer a variety of programs including individual activities, team and lifelong sports. These activites provide an opportunity for the physical, mental, emotional growth and development of all students.

Grading is based on class participation. We also factor in class attitude, behavior, and sportsmanship.

An Intramural program is offered after school and is open to all students who wish to participate. Activities vary from year to year, but many include: Basketball, Tennis, Wiffleball, Indoor Soccer, Hiking, Snowshoeing, Badminton, Rollerblading, Floor Hockey, and Bombardment. We encourage all students to take advantage of these after school opportunities.
