WRSD Biomass Plant

High School / Middle School Biomass Plant

Winnisquam Regional School District is proud to have completed construction of the biomass heat plant, as well as many other energy upgrades throughout the school district. On Wednesday, October 20, 2010, Ian Raymond, chairman of the Energy Committee of Sanbornton, had the honor of lighting the fire in the Messersmith wood fueled boiler for the first time. He was joined by the school's custodial staff, who will be operating the equipment and underwent training. Also at the event were representatives from Better World Energies (the northeast representative for Messersmith), who are providing the training and are commissioning the equipment; and representatives from Honeywell, who are involved with the performance monitoring systems, project management, and the maintenance contract for the school district. The combination of energy upgrades/retrofits, and the biomass heat plant are estimated to save the district as much as $5 million over the next 25 years, and in addition, will allow the school district to have a much lighter impact on the environment. The construction was completed with a combination of financing sources including grants, rebates, ARRA funding, and performance contracting, thereby posing no additional tax burden-- in fact it is projected to be cash flow positive from day one. An open house so that residents may view the facility will be scheduled sometime next month.
