WINNISQUAM STATE TEST RESULTS ON THE RISE!

October 2007 New England Common Assessment Program Testing (NECAP) Testing District Results

On January 29th, 2008, the New Hampshire Department of Education released the October 2007 New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) testing results in Grades 3-8.  The District results show that students met or exceeded proficiency achievement levels in reading by 72%, in math by 62%, and in writing by 49%.  Comparing the achievement results of 2007 to 2006 in the data chart below, we showed improvement and increased proficiency levels in reading by 6%, in math by 7%, and in writing by 8%.

Every grade level showed improvement in reading.  In math every grade level improved with the exception of 5th grade that showed a 2% decrease in math.  Writing is tested only in grades 5 and 8.  Both grade levels showed improvement in the testing results.

The improved student achievement results are evidence of the initiatives that have been implemented in the District.  Some of those initiatives are:

  • increasing time for teacher’s professional development
  • differentiating instruction for all students
  • identifying learning gaps
  •  creating and implementing curriculum to address students’ learning needs
  • purchasing support materials for teacher’s to use in the classroom
  • analyzing assessment data for identifying students’ learning needs

Another vital component to implementing the initiatives listed above is the commitment and dedication of our teachers and administrators.  They have put in an extensive amount of time beyond the contractual day to review student data, plan lessons collaboratively, and take ownership in being accountable for improving student learning.

"2008 NH Literacy Teacher
of the Year"
Mrs. Donna Burbank

Mrs. Burbank has been teaching elementary school in the Winnisquam Regional School District for 25 years.  She currently teaches fourth grade at Southwick School.  She has a real passion for teaching, especially reading and writing literacy.  Mrs. Burbank was nominated by a former student and his mother for this honor.

This person is the type of teacher that makes all of us love teachers and respect them as the most valuable gifts in the world.  Her warmth, compassion, endless energy, sense of humor and patience are just a few of the things that make her one of those teachers we, as parents, know our children will never forget.”

The Granite State Reading Council of the International Reading Association will honor Mrs. Burbank this spring at the Author’s and Illustrator’s Festival.  Our congratulations to Donna Burbank for this honor and for making literacy fun, exciting and something to look forward to every day for all of her students.
