Specials consist of Art, Music, Physical Education, Library and Computer Lab

Art

All students take part in the Art Program. Art is an exciting and creative moment each week. Students are exposed to a large number of mediums during the school year. Art work is continually on display. Special Art shows are publicized during the school year.

Computer Lab

Southwick has twenty-four computers in a networked lab. Students are scheduled in by their classroom for two forty minute periods to learn keyboarding skills and explore programs which are appropriate to the academic skills which they are learning in their classroom. Students under the direct supervision of their teacher and with the express permission of their parents/guardians may use the Internet. An acceptable use policy has been designed for elementary school students and will be presented to parents prior to students use of the Internet.

Music

All students take part in the Music Program. Music is taught through a diversity of methods: Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze and an array of materials to motive the students. Special productions are put on by the different grade levels. Chorus is available to the fourth and fifth grade students who meet weekly. Instrumental music instruction and band are available to the fifth grade students who choose to take part.

Library - Media Center

Class groups meet once a week for library/media skills and the selection of reading books. Small groups and individuals are encouraged to use the center for research. Currently the center has one multimedia system which is on line to the Internet. The center’s card catalog is computer operated.

Physical Education

All students who are well enough to attend school are required to participate in the physical education classes. Students may be excused for medical reasons; long term medical excuses must be written by a physician. All students are responsible for wearing appropriate clothing on days they have physical education classes. Sneakers, pants, and T-shirts are recommended. Students will participate in our physical fitness program, "Physical Best".
