 Dear Families,

Last Thursday, we had to dismiss early due to the weather.  The first notice to parents is the AlertNow that you receive on your phones.  In the district, each elementary school then makes contact with all the parents to make sure:  1. The plan you wrote in August still applies.  2.  Knowing that the students are going to a place earlier than usual, we need to make sure an adult will be there at that time.

We realize that it is another phone call at work, but many times parents’ requests for where their child should go have changed.  We want to make sure that all the children are in a safe place with the early dismissal.

“Congratulations” to Henry Stock for his drawing that was chosen to be on the Sanbornton Town Library card.  The drawing is greatJ  (We have an example in our office.)  Also, “Congratulations” for the following for their placed entries:  Christian Smith for second place, Audrey Budington and Chad Couture for their third place entries.  Nice job to everyone!!!!

It seems unbelievable that the holiday season is here again.  All of us at SCS wish all of you, and your family, the very best holiday season.  Enjoy being together and have fun.  We hope you enjoy our individual sentiments on the last page.  Happy HolidaysJ

THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS:  Every trimester, we send home reminder letters to parents when the children have 10% or more absentees or tardies from school.  Mrs. Muraszko prepared the letters to go home on Tuesday this week, and we only had 6 (six) students who received the letters.  Thank you to the parents for having your child here on time, and here for the day.  We really appreciate your support!  Nice jobJ  Again, “Thank you” to everyone.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FIRST AND FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS:  “Congratulations” to the students in first and fifth grade, their teachers, Mrs. Laux, and Mrs. Hayes for such a nice concert the other evening.  The children were all dressed up, excited to perform their songs they had been practicing, and eager to please everyone.  Again, thank you for a job nicely doneJ

MAP TESTING BEGINNING JANUARY 5TH:  This time of year when a lot of notices go home it is difficult for parents to keep up with all of them.  In order to help with that, we will be sending home a notice the first week of January with the MAP schedule for testing, beginning January 5th until January 31st.  To help parents with appointments, the following grade levels are tentatively scheduled for the first week in January testing:

January 5th:  Ms. Hoffmire’s class (10:10 AM); Mrs. Blake’s class (11:20 AM); and Ms. Richardson’s class (1:30 PM)

January 6th:  Mrs. Crowell’s class (9:00 AM); Mrs. Hines’s class (10:10 AM); Mr. Winkfield’s class (11:20 AM); and Mrs. Flack’s class (1:40 PM)

January 7th:  Mr. Cormier’s class (10: 10 AM); Mr. Winkfield’s class (11:20 AM); and Mrs. Young’s class (1:40 PM)

January 8th:  Mrs. Hines’ class (10:10 AM) ; Ms. Hoffmire’s class (11:20 AM); and Mrs. Flack’s class (1:40 PM)

January 9th:  Mrs. Blake’s class (11:20 AM) and Mrs. Young’s class (1:40 PM)

Thank you for your continued support of having the children eat a good breakfast, early to bed, and here to take the tests.  A letter will be going home the first week of January.  Thank you.

PBIS Focus of the Month (January) is compassion.  The definition the Universal Team is using for compassion is treat other people as you would like to be treated.

C = Care for others

O = Offer your help

M = Make people happy

P = Pay attention to feelings

A = Always show compassion

S = Send cards

S = Sit with a sick friend

I = Include others

O = Other people matter

N = Never be unkind

The school will be looking for ways to show compassion in different areas of the school for the month of January.  Please join us in helping your child better understand different ways to show compassion to others.  Thank you.

SNOWY DAYS:  Imagine this………..a snowy day, lots of excitement, and busses running late.  We take attendance in school once the final bus arrives, and find a long list of children unaccounted for.  We worry immediately about children perhaps still waiting along the road, and begin our efforts to reach everyone.  Most of the time, we are successful and find that parents have made a decision to keep their child home due to the inclement weather.  Until then, it can be a very stressful time.

Please help us on these stormy days, to leave a message at school, letting us know that your child is safe at home.  Working together we can work to do much to ensure the safety of all our children.  Thank you!

WINTER DRESS:  Thank you very much to parents for doing such a fantastic job having the students dressed appropriately!  With all the cold weather and snow, the children have been outfitted to be able to go in the snow and on the snow hill.  Thank you – great jobJ

BEGINNNING BAND NEWS:        Beginning band students have begun full band rehearsals and are working towards becoming more comfortable as members of a musical ensemble.  We’ve had a successful start and are concentrating on improving music reading and performance skills. This month I will be emphasizing following the conductor’s directions as well as maintaining a balanced sound.  We will be discussing the role of each individual in the band.  They are coming along nicely and will be ready for their mid-winter performances prior to the February break.  Please continue to listen to your children perform at home – you are their best audience.  As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Thank you.  Mrs. Benton

GRADE 5 PARENTS:  Please note on January 21st @ 6:00 PM, the WRMS is having an evening for parents who would like more information about Pre-AP classes and Foundations of Algebra for next year in sixth grade.

GRADE 4 PARENTS:  On January 27th, the fourth grade students in the WRSD will be taking the NAEP (National Assessment of Education Progress or the National Report Card).  It is a nationally mandated project for the National Center for Education Statistics in the US Dept of Education.  We will be sending more information home in January.
