Fifth grade is an important year! Academics and developing responsible, inquisitive and dedicated learners is our main focus. In reading, we have implemented the Story Town reading program developed by Harcourt. A writing curriculum that is used district-wide has been created that will accompany the reading program. The students will be working in the Go Math program. Students are expected to master many mathematical concepts. A few of these are 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, division with two-digit divisors and a deeper understanding of fractions. Students should master all addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts by the end of the year. The district has recently purchased Foss science curriculum kits. Fifth graders will study Living Systems, Environments, Mixtures and Solutions and Newton's Laws. Our focus in Social Studies is the history of the United States of America. We start with early exploration of North America and proceed through history to western expansion and the Civil War.
The children have moved up the ladder and are our school's role models. There is so much to look forward to in fifth grade! Fifth graders organize and run our Fall Festival in October. We build geometric gingerbread houses in December. The students also take part in the L.E.A.D program in the winter/spring. The year wraps up with a 5th grade end of year celebration.
By the end of the year, your child will be prepared for the move to the Middle School.
