First Grade is an exciting year! The first grade classroom is a busy
child centered learning environment. Learning is accomplished
through cooperative groups, whole group lessons, small groups and
individual conferences. Interactions, sharing, modeling and cooperation
enhance the atmosphere in classrooms that promote warm, friendly and
safe places for children to learn at their own level and feel great
Our core reading program is StoryTown published by Harcourt. There
are 90 minutes of reading instruction each day and each of the 5
essential areas of reading are covered: phonics, phonemic awareness,
fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development. Many of the
lessons are whole class instruction with small group support.
The Go Math curriculum for First Grade follows the common core
standards and is focused around mastery of addition facts using eleven
specific strategies. Throughout the year, students will build an
understanding of whole number relationships, place value, linear
measurement (measurement with rulers, paperclips, links) and
compose/decompose geometric shapes such as forming a rocket ship by
variety of shapes.
In First Grade the curriculum is using an inquiry- based program
called FOSS or Focus on Science Systems. The curriculum consists of
three units: Insects, Air & Weather, Balance & Motion. Within
each of these units students will participate in hands-on learning
investigations and discussions that incorporate science vocabulary.
The focus of our Social Studies curriculum is family, all about me,
holidays and mapping (our town, The United States, continents,
oceans and directional words).
