TILTON — Despite numerous opportunities for both Winnisquam and Newfound,
nothing was decided between the two field hockey rivals after 75 minutes of
action.
Meeting for the second time in a week, the two talented Class M-S squads went up
and down the field before they settled for a 1-1 tie here Friday afternoon. With
the deadlock, Winnisquam stands at 3-0-1 on the season while Newfound is 2-1-1.
"It was an
exciting game," Newfound coach Karri Peterson said. "They had
opportunities to score and we had opportunities to score. In overtime, both
teams had opportunities."
Winnisquam clearly had the best chances in the extra 7 on 7, 15 minute period;
including a penalty corner with no time left. The hosts fired three shots in the
scramble, including one that was swept off the line by Newfound goalie Sarah
McGraw.
Ali Keith put Winnisquam on top 11 minutes into the contest, firing home a pass
from Kelley Muraszko. Winnisquam would maintain that slim advantage until
Newfound would break through in the second period. Erin McHugh fired the tying
goal into the back of the cage, with an assist from Kelsey Watson with a little
more than 20 minute remaining in the contest.
From there, the action went back-and-forth with both teams enjoying scoring
chances.
"We didn't play that well, and a lot of it has to do with them
(Newfound)," Winnisquam coach Len Lavin said. "They are very quick.
"We had to work for the tie," added Lavin. "They certainly
deserved no less than a tie."
Newfound owned a slight edge in both penalty corner chances (10-9) and shots
(10-8). McGraw finished with seven saves in the Newfound goal.
Lavin was pleased with the performance of his sweeper Phylicia Martel and goalie
Molly Ryan, who finished with nine saves.
Tuesday, Newfound entertains unbeaten Berlin and Winnisquam plays host to
Somersworth.

three games (25-13, 25-14, 25-12).
Winnisquam falls to 0-4 with the loss.
For Gilford, Ally
Murphy had 17 assists and continued to show great veteran leadership on the

Haley Jackson (3 kills) and Megan Korber (2 blocks). Defensively Erin Wheeler,

Winnisquam 3, Sept 20th, 2005
Newfound 1
Newfound took the
first game, 21-25, but Winnisquam rallied to sweep the next three (25-11, 25-19,
25-19) and win at home.
Tina O'Brien turned
the tide by starting game two with five straight points, then she gave way to
Allison Forsythe for points 7-14. Rebecca Orndorff led the way defensively, with
Lindsay Andrus (three blocks in each game) contributing at the net. Laura
Romero, Jenna Goss and Katie Potter also played well in the back row.
"I was very proud of the team tonight," said Coach Karen Tryon. "We fought from the start of game one 'til the end of game four. Everyone contributed to the win tonight."
Winnisquam
shuts down I-L Oct 4, 2005
TILTON — A stellar defense and some timely offense were the ingredients for
Winnisquam Tuesday in a hard fought victory over Lakes Region rival Inter-Lakes.
The Bears continued to make their move to the top of the Class M standings and
now stand at 10-3 with the win. Inter-Lakes dropped to 2-10.
"I was happy with our defensive effort tonight," said Winnisquam coach
Amy Dutton. "The kids were pumped up today and it was just a total team
effort. The kids really did their jobs."
It looked like it would be a big day on the offensive end for the Bears. Just 33
seconds into the contest Rob Hallowell drilled a shot just outside the box from
25-yards out to give Winnisquam the early 1-0 advantage. Inter-Lakes though
would clamp down on the explosive Bears' offense as goalie Parker Hansen made a
number of stops to keep the Lakers in the game and preserve the 1-0 deficit at
the half.
"You have to give Inter-Lakes credit," said Dutton. "They didn't
quit and they battled us to the end. They came up with some big plays and fought
hard and hung tough."
Winnisquam would get a little insurance in the second half as sophomore Matt
Kievit tallied in the 33rd minute off a pass from Ryan Speikers. The Bears would
put the game away in the 68th minute as Speikers fired a direct kick into the
left corner.
The Winnisquam defense would make that lead hold up as seniors John Robinson and
Taylor Plimpton shut down the Lakers' offense. Winnisquam netminder Justin
Dawalga made just two saves in the shut out victory.
"Our defense has been doing that all season," Dutton pointed out.
"The defensive effort these kids put out is unbelievable. We really did a
nice job of shutting them down."
Winnisquam travels to Prospect Mountain Thursday while Inter-Lakes hits the road
to battle area foe Gilford.
"We're 10-3 right now and we haven't yet played our best soccer," said
Dutton. "We haven't peaked yet and hopefully that happens come playoff
time. I think we're trying not to look ahead. We have two tough games coming up
and we know we have to play out best soccer if we want to win."
